“We had always wanted a daughter. I don’t have a sister and girls care more about their parents than boys. After our daughter’s birth, my wife wrote to the PM asking him to name our daughter. She also mentioned that his campaign for the girl child has been an inspiration and that two Indian girls had won medals in the Olympics, which is a moment of joy for the country,” said Bharat.
He added that he sent the letter by speed post to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on August 13 itself. It was a Saturday, I received a call around 10 pm. The person on the phone said the prime minister wanted to talk to me. Then the PM came on the line and spoke to me for about two-and-a-half minutes. He congratulated me and said I should name the girl Vaibhavi because it will include letters of both me and my wife’s names,” said Bharat.
The next day, an elated Bharat told villagers about the call from the PM. But not many believed his story, he said.
He called the number from which he had received the call from the PMO. He requested the official on the phone to send him a letter containing the PM’s response.
Bharat received a brief letter from the PMO through speed post. The letter, was addressed to Bharat and Vibha and signed by the PM. In the letter, the PM congratulated the couple for “the arrival of a daughter in your home”. “You will fulfill Vaibhavi’s dreams and Vaibhavi will become your power, my good wishes…” he added.
Bharat said he went ahead and showed the letter to the villagers. “I had kept the letter with me for more than a month. But then I thought I should tell more people about it because this is a very good thing. Then I told the mediapersosns about it,” he claimed. Bharat, who had studied up to Class XII, works in Agra. Vibha is a postgraduate in commerce and has a bachelor’s degree in education, he said.
When contacted, PMO officials confirmed that the PM had sent such a letter to the couple.
