Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) chief Mayawati’s decision to skip Sunday’s “BJP Bhagao, Desh Bachao’’ rally, organised by Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) in Patna as a show of Opposition unity, is an indication from the non-BJP alliance of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls
After refusal of Mayawati to send a representative to the rally , after the month of her resignation from Rajya Sabha, accusing the BJP for not allowing her to speak in the favor of dalits.
Lalu Prasad expressed support for her, offering to send her to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar, Mayawati also termed CBI raids on Lalu Prasad and his family as “Misuse of Machinary” by the BJP government of the opposition parties,on thursday she said “no one from her party would share the stage with any opposition party”.
Till a decision is taken on division of seats among the parties for coming elections, she said “seat sharing” talks often leads to last minute collapse of the coalitions and her party could not think of being any part of alliance without having respectable number of seats. Her posture of “seat sharing” nearly 2 years before the Lok Sabha elections is due, is an indication of hard task for the strategist of the opposition. In UP BSP soure said “Mayawati is unlikely to settle for fewer seats than the SP and may also seak a few seats in neighboring Madhya Pradesh where party has some base. The largest party in alliance but with little base in up when we accommodate congress.
BSP source explains that the participation of the BSP in any opposition rally may influence the party’s dalit support base even though there was no final alliance in place for the 2019 elections. Decision of Nitish Kumar (CM Bihar) to ignore Lalu Prasad and join hands with the BJP, also seems to influence Mayawati, like Kumar, she had joined hands with BJP in the past and also sees SP as her main rival in the state. She could keep her options for both the sides, Mayawati has been against forging any electoral alliances before elections as she thinks they benefit only the BSP’s alliance partners. The party’s poor performance in 2014 Lok Sabha election and 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections which forced her to think about her position.
Mayawati’s Skipping of the rally also sents signals to the strategists of the opposition. Akhilesh Yadav has given many indication of his ally with Mayawati. There is a section in SP that thinks only the SP and Congress together should fight with BJP.
They argue that is BSP contested alone it will only lead the votes of the BJP to them selves and not that of SP.
