In what can be called as one of the biggest setbacks for Congress party in the recent past, two very senior and seasoned Congress leaders have decided to quit the party. In the recent past, several senior Congress leaders such as Rita Bahuguna Joshi from Congress have quit the party to join BJP and other parties.
Today two of the senior most leaders in Congress – Ambika Soni and Shankarsinh Vaghela announced that they are resigning from the Congress party.
In the morning, reports got out that Shankarsinh Vaghela, one of the most senior Congress leaders in Gujarat Congress decided to quit the party. Vaghela played pivotal role in the establishment of Congress party in Gujarat.
In a double whammy for the Congress, on a day which the party’s preparations for its forthcoming Gujarat Assembly elections were thrown into disarray due to Shankarsinh Vaghela’s purported departure, senior leader Ambika Soni, a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab and former I&B Minister from the Manmohan Singh-led UPA2 has tendered her resignation from the party posts she occupies.
Soni is the Congress’ secretary in charge of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. She does plan to stay as an MP for the Congress. The resignation is yet to be accepted by the Congress party.
However, it is to be noted that Ambika Soni has not quit as a Member of Parliament. As per sources, she has quit Congress due to differences with the party top command and feels that she can continue to be a Rajya Sabha MP without the support of Congress.
What is to be noted that these exits come after Amit Shah’s proud declaration that India will very soon be “Congress Free”, as he launched the “Congress Mukt Bharat” campaign. The main aim of this campaign Shah had said was to eliminate Congress from the states that they are already ruling.
